New Year's Eve -- Thursday December 31st 2009 -- Swing Time and Swing Gang present... Swingin' the New Year, a grand New Year's Eve celebration for all ages, happening at the spectacular St. Petersburg Coliseum! The evening includes music, dancing and celebration 9pm-1am, plus an intro swing-dance lesson 8-9pm (no partner needed); doors open at 7:30pm. The celebration features a midnight countdown & balloon drop, dance performances, a vintage fashion photo shoot & contest, party favors & chocolates, prize giveaways, free parking, and a full cash bar with champagne bottles and toasts available. The St. Petersburg Coliseum provides historic swing-era ambiance, a smoke-free atmosphere, and an unparalleled 15,000 square foot oak dance floor! New Year's and vintage attire are encouraged. VINTAGE FASHION PHOTO SHOOT & CONTEST at SWINGIN' THE NEW YEAR
Everyone's invited to dress up in vintage attire this New Year's Eve and enter the Vintage Fashion Photo Shoot & Contest at Swingin' the New Year! Here's how it works. Both ladies and men are encouraged to enter the contest -- there will be top prizes for the best male & female contestants. Choose your favorite era and dress accordingly; just remember that this is New Year's Eve, so you'll want to look fabulous! Stop by the photo alcove during prejudging hours, 7:30-10:00pm, to enter the contest and get your photo taken. By the way, anyone can get their photo taken at the photo alcove free of charge during the evening; you need not enter the contest or be dressed vintage. All photos will be posted online soon after the event. During prejudging, judges will select the top few male and female contestants to "walk the runway" during the finals. Finals happen at 10:30pm, and all contestants must report to the stage area (dancefloor level) BEFORE 10:30pm. To make it quick this year, only the finalists will be called to walk the runway. Winners will be chosen by judges and audience applause. 1st place female and male contestants each receive an all-weekend all-access pass to Swing Dance USA -- a $100+ value! Top contestants also receive prize packages containing swing-dance event tickets and other good stuff. All contestants get their free New Year's Eve photos taken in the photo alcove!

Get ready to jump & boogie, rock & swing with internationally renowned piano superstar, Mitch Woods, and his band, the Rocket 88's! From swingin' New Orleans rhythm & blues dance grooves (in the style of Fats Domino), to swingin' high-energy originals, Mitch Woods & his Rocket 88's deliver music that'll make you want to jump up and dance! The event starts with a group swing-dance lesson, 8-9pm (no partner needed), followed by live music & dancing, 9:00pm-12:30am, plus a dance show at intermission. It all happens Friday, January 15th in the spectacular waterfront ballroom of the Gulfport Casino.
Boogie woogie pianist and vocalist, Mitch Woods, has been pumping the piano for over 25 years in the San Francisco Bay area. He's become a modern master of the eighty-eights, with wry vocals and thunderous chops that inspired legendary jump-bluesman Joe Liggins to tag him as "Mr. Rocket 88". He's recorded eight critically acclaimed CDs, and headlined some of the most prestigious clubs and music festivals in the world, including the Montreal Jazz Festival, the Amsterdam Blues Festival, and the Belgium Rhythm & Blues Festival, to name a few. He's played with, recorded with, and appeared in concert with a huge list of music legends including James Brown, Stevie Ray Vaughan, The Neville Brothers, John Lee Hooker, and The Fabulous Thunderbirds.
Swing Time is Florida's Premier Swing Event, held one Friday each month in Tampa Bay at the Gulfport Casino Ballroom. The Gulfport Casino is located in the St. Petersburg area at 5500 Shore Blvd. S., Gulfport FL 33707.
