********************************************************************** Swing News, Tuesday 9/1/98, Issue #17 Send submissions to XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Send addition/deletion/address-change requests to XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Send all other e-mail to XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Labor Day Weekend's coming up. Locally, the Mooks play Club More a couple of times and the Sugar Palm continues their Fri/Sat/Sun swing nights. For those of you living in Southerly locals like Sarasota, or who don't mind a little drive, Dem Brooklyn Bums will be appearing in Ft Myers Fri-Sun. I had the pleasure of dancing to this band for many hours a few weeks ago in Orlando and can highly recommend them. One final note: If you know of any swing-related events or news happening in the Tampa Bay area, or would like to briefly review an event you went to, send it in (to XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX). This newsletter works because people, like you, who know about something, decide to share that knowledge with everyone else. Have a fun Labor Day! Sam ---------------------------------------------------------------------- THIS LABOR DAY WEEKEND The Swingin' Mooks will be at Club More in downtown Clearwater (703 Franklin St), this Thursday & Friday (9/3 & 9/4), 10pm - 1am, in the warehouse. Smoking is allowed, but the windows should be open. Club More has a floorboard dance floor of moderate size. Phone 466-6673. Dem Brooklyn Bums will be playing Fri, Sat, and Sun nights (Sep 4-6) in Ft Myers, at Peter's La Cuisine, 2224 Bay St. No info is available on dancefloor conditions, smoking policy, or show times. Luigi Babe, their manager, writes: Hey Gang, We are gonna be out there this weekend for Labor Day. -- Da' Crack Daddie of Swing, Luigi Babe Check out: http://www.BrooklynBums.com (Dem Bums Web Site) http://Chatterbox.pseudo.com (Swinging Chatterbox) Call the Sugar Palm (248-5549) or check the Weekly Planet for their Labor Day Weekend schedule. As of press time (6pm Tuesday), they were still advertising last weekend's events on their phone line. We haven't received news of any bands, so expect a DJ night or three Friday - Sunday. Also, rumor has it that the free dance lesson is moving to a new 8-9pm slot and that the Sugar Palm has a new website. If anyone knows the website, could they please send it in to XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX ? Also, if anyone associated with Sugar Palm is a regular reader, it would be nice if the Club could, each week, submit the next week's events to Swing News so that we're able to cover them. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NEXT WEEK AND BEYOND Sat Sep 12: WMNF Birthday Bash at Coliseum with Swingin' Mooks, plus Reckless Kelly and the Dave Ware Group. Walter, the trombone player for JSS. Jet Set Six is launching their tour in support of their new album on October 9th and 10th right here at the Sugar Palm. J. Walter said the band really had a great time playing here and are eagerly looking forward to coming back in Oct. as long as I'm swingin' -- vince vega ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WEB PAGE ALMOST READY FOR CARPOOLING, ETC Loyal readers may remember talk a couple of issues back about creating a web site where, initially, people could find/give rides to and from swing events. Later, we could maybe add things such as dance classes, dance partners, swing links, and overflow from the newsletter. Thanks to Ken Walker's work, we're about to have such a site. But Ken is looking for some good swing graphics, so help him out if you can. Ken Walker writes: I've been working on the database portion of the site and almost have it ready. Do you have any logos or other images you use for flyers, brochures, newsletters, etc? I would like to make the site look interesting. Any images help. Maybe we could post it in the newsletter. Have anyone who would like to do some little images for the site e-mail them to me. I can incorporate them into the site. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DRESS CODE AT THE SUGAR PALM Bob Sutter writes: When can I lambast Sugar Palm for their dress policy? Also, include as part of their coverage if you can. People are being turned away at the door. The Sugar Palm has instituted a new dress code which, according to their phone message, includes "no shorts, sneakers, baseball caps, sloppy jeans, etc". Presumably, baseball gloves, bats, and cleats are also prohibited. Bob may get a chance to give his two cents on the dress code in an upcoming issue, possibly returning for a stint as Swing News editor. --Sam ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WHERE TO SWING IN MELBOURNE AND FT LAUDERDALE Traci Wheeler writes: Going to Melbourne for Labor Day Weekend.
