Lots of great events coming up. Sam is taking a break. Candye Kane and the Swingin' Armadillos will be shaking the Oaks at Skipper's this Saturday. Looks like a good bet! The always energetic Dan Electro and the Silvertones will be playing this Saturday at the Bourbon Street Cafe in Clearwater, and the 42nd Street band will be at the Sugar Palm on Friday. Please wear your best duds at the Sugar Palm. (Dress code enforced, Feels like I'm in high school again.) For those of you who attended the WMNF Birthday Party, it was somewhat of a disappointment. The usually great Mooks were hyperspastic. Not much danceable music. Way too fast. The second band, Reckless Kelly, actually turned out to be the best for dancing. First band not worth mentioning (too late). Did anyone notice if Focus published our swingmail subscription??? (Hint, Hint. It's XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX) Bob ---------------------------------------------------------------------- THIS FRIDAY (September 18th) The 42nd Street Band plays the Sugar Palm. Opens 8PM. Free dance lessons 8-9 PM. $7. Swing showoff at about 11 PM. The Sugar Palm Ballroom has a large floating-wood dance floor, is nonsmoking (with adjacent rooms provided for smokers), and is located at the corner of Palm Ave and 15th St in Ybor City. Directions: Take I-4 to Exit 1, go south about 2 blocks, turn right on Palm Ave, and go to 15th St. The Sugar Palm's on the left. Turn left and pay to park or turn right and park on the street. Note: Dress code enforced. Call 248-5549 for more info. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- THIS SATURDAY (September 19th) Candye Kane and the Swingin' Armadillos and a warmup bluesman named Harper play at a Swing and Blues Party at the Skipper's Smokehouse (scene), Tampa, FL. $7 Advance $10 day of show. Show starts at 8. This sounds like a good bet!!! Sam highly recommends this after last year's show. Skippers says: 'Theatrical, campy, bawdy high energy blues & rockabilly. 200 pounds of blues and swing fun, Candye takes on censorship, homophobia, sizism & sexism. [ I wonder what her feelings on Clinton are??? ] Hints of Etta James, Big Mama Thornton, Wanda Jackson, and Patsy Cline. Sue "Beehive" Thompson on piano and accordian, and an ex-Pleasure Baron on sax.' Harper- Australian w/ soulful vocals, & a funky feel aggressive harp blues. There were dancers of all ages and styles including lots of young folks. They had several dance contests. SPATS is located in a shopping center (behind the Dairy Queen) at the corner of Fruitville Rd. and Beneva Rd. It has a nice size wooden dance floor and is smoke-free. Admission is $5. Friendly people. That is all for now. I found some interesting stuff on the web -- check out http://jitterbuzz.com. Some interesting info on music, clothes, books, videos out there. Also if you see a link for flyin' lindy hoppers, they have some neat moving pictures (if you saw the special on VH1, they were some of the dancers). If you want to read about some of the history of lindy (and swing in general), I recommend Swingin' at the Savoy by Norma Miller (one of the early Lindy Hoppers). --------------------------------------------------------------------- Belinda writes: Hi. At Tampa Bay Tech (High School) They are offering swing lessons on Wednesday afternoons, but they haven't advertised it very well. I think only people who attend the school are welcome, but in case anyone who gets this newsletter goes there, they would probably be interested! There is a new swing band. They haven't made it REALLY big yet, but they're great. They are a Christian band (but not corny Christian) called The W's. They're really good. Their new album is called "Fourth From The Last". They are awesome! Also, I've made it a habit to get to Sugar Palm Club at least once a month and am LOVING IT!!! I hope you can use some of this stuff! --------------------------------------------------------------------- Traci Wheeler writes: Thanks for bringing up the dress code at the Sugar Palm. The Rat Pack in Orlando has a strict dress code. Gentlemen must have on a collared shirt. Many people - ok, they were mostly tourists - were turned away. [ Thanks for your input. I guess I'll wear a dress next time! ] --------------------------------------------------------------------- PARTNER WANTED Hey all: I am looking for a beginner/intermediate follower who is interested in practicing Swing dance and possibly Latin dance, during the week and/or weekends.
