Be sure to catch your share of outdoor swing dancing at the Clearwater Beach pavilion next Sunday! Thanks to Bob for editing and sending out the last Swing News, and thanks to Michelle for providing a computer for this one. See you on the dance floor! Sam ---------------------------------------------------------------------- THIS WEEKEND The Sugar Palm continues their swing nights this Friday (10/2) through Sunday (10/4) with open dancing to swing DJ's, plus lessons and show-offs. Friday and Saturday run 8pm-3am with a free dance lesson 8-9pm; $5 admission; ages 18 and up. Sunday is all-ages night and runs 6pm-10pm, also with free lessons; admission is $7. A swing show-off takes place each night -- up to four couples can sign up at the DJ booth to dance to their favorite song for the crowd. A moderate dress code is enforced. Call 813-248-5549 for more info. The Sugar Palm Ballroom has a large wooden dance floor, is nonsmoking (with adjacent rooms provided for smokers), and is located at the corner of Palm Ave and 15th St in Ybor City. Directions: Take I-4 to Exit 1, go south about 2 blocks, turn right on Palm Ave, and go to 15th St. The Sugar Palm's on the left. Turn left and pay to park or turn right and park on the street. The Swingin' Mooks continue their regular Thursday night gig at Club More on 10/1 from 10pm to 1am. Club More is in downtown Clearwater (703 Franklin St). Smoking is allowed, but the windows should be open. Club More has a floorboard dance floor of moderate size. Phone 727-466-6673 or http://www.greenbenches.com/club.htm . ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NEXT WEEKEND It's time for some outdoor swing on the beach! Clearwater Beach's sunset music series will feature a free concert by the Swingin' Mooks on Sunday (Oct 11) at Pier 60's outdoor pavilion, and our group has been asked to give a dance lesson before the concert. The dance lesson runs 4:30-5:00 and the band plays 5-8pm. If you're able to help with the lesson, just show up a little before 4:30. The pavilion itself is huge, with a wooden floor. The organizers are providing plenty of dance space, in the hopes that some of us who know how will get out there and dance. With the weather starting to cool down, it should be a great way to spend a Sunday evening. Directions: Take 60 West until it ends at Pier 60. (You might have to cross a bridge or two.) Park somewhere and walk to the pavilion. On Friday (10/9) and Saturday (10/10), the band Jet Set Six from NYC returns to Tampa Bay, to the Sugar Palm. [For those who missed them last time, they put on a great show, with some very fine and unique swing sounds; highly danceable --Sam]. Phone 813-248-5549 for more info. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BEYOND NEXT WEEKEND Fri Oct 16: Set 'Em Up Joe at Sugar Palm; 813-248-5549 Sat Oct 17: Set 'Em Up Joe at Sugar Palm; 813-248-5549 Sun Oct 18: Set 'Em Up Joe at Skipper's; 813-971-0666 Skipper's on Set 'Em Up Joe: "NYC swing outfit w/ amazing originals, traditional swings & a sprig of rock 'n roll" --------------------------------------------------------------------- BUSINESS CARDS We're looking for one or more people to volunteer to design and print some business cards for our swing network -- these are the same cards you probably received to sign up for Swing News. We already have some wording and a prototype card, but feel free to be creative, ie with graphics. If anyone is willing to donate paper or printing/copying, that would also be greatly appreciated. E-mail XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX . --------------------------------------------------------------------- ORLANDO Traci Wheeler writes: The Orchid Garden at Church Street Station in Orlando is now swingin'. Had a great time at this new swing club. Johnny Cool and the Mobster Band (or something like that) played. After 11:30pm, there was more than enough room to dance. (Remember what that feels like?) This club features a dance contest judged by audience participation. There were some good dancers participating, but I've seen more polished dancers in Tampa (yeah, Tampa). The winners of the contest receive free admission to the club for a year and $$$$. When the band went on break, many of the swing dancers met in the middle of the dance floor to practice aerials and teach others. Friendly bunch of couples who were eager to share some new moves that I have never seen. They taught us the scissor, and we taught them the cartwheel. (Thanks, Frank Ingo for teaching us the cartwheel.) $5 at the door if you are a Florida resident. Get there soon before it catches on and there's no room. Here's a summary of the swing clubs discovered in Orlando: * Rat Packs (dress code & 21 and up) * Orchid Garden (no dress code & 18 and up) * Atlantic Dance Hall (no dress code & 18 and up -- check listing for swing nights) --------------------------------------------------------------------- MORE ON SWING AT TAMPA BAY TECH (HIGH SCHOOL) Nathaniel writes: Hello. The after-party was held in the Gorilla Theatre space on Hubert off of MLK. The joint was set to rocking by the always hep and stylin' Dan Electro & the Silvertones. My friends and I made the scene about an hour into the bash. Band rocking, people sitting on hands, wiggling in seats. We shook a leg to one tune, and the floodgates opened. Everybody that knew how was swingin' it, and even a few that didn't gave it the old college try. The highlight of my evening? The man himself, Dan Electro, took me for a quick spin around the floor, and taught me a new step. This guy is a class act all the way! :) Keep on dancin', kats and kittens! --------------------------------------------------------------------- MAKE IT BIG IN SHOW BIZ W.E.
