Your chance is coming up this weekend, with great concerts Sunday (with Jet Set Six) at the Italian Club and Friday (with Rocket 88) at the Gulfport Casino. After that, beyond the Steven Mitchell weekend, there are no live bands scheduled at local dance venues. Inside word from the organizers of the Gulfport Casino and Italian Club swing nights is that any future scheduling of live-band dances will depend on turnout to this weekend's shows. This weekend features two of the best bands out there, playing in great ballrooms. The organizers have devoted a lot of effort and risked a lot of money to arrange these shows for your benefit. Great locations for live swing dances are few and far between -- let's not lose any more like we did the Coliseum (no swing shows since last October's Swingerhead failure) and the Sugar Palm. Please don't take them for granted. And please do your part -- grab some flyers this Wednesday and otherwise help spread the word! Thanks to all who made the Gang's 2nd B-Day Party a raging success. It was one heck of a time. Special thanks to everyone who helped set up & decorate, and to Sue for bringing and donating a lot of the food. I look forward to the Suncoast Swing Gang's third year. Speaking of our third year, we just completed a marathon Annual Meeting last Wednesday, at which I presented a summary of our accomplishments this past year and goals for the upcoming year. This Swing News issue is full, so I'll talk about some of these things in the next Swing News. Until then, I hope to see everyone this Sunday at the Italian Club! Sam ---------------------------------------------------------------------- THE UPCOMING TWO WEEKS This Friday (Apr 28), Rocket 88 from Orlando plays the Gulfport Casino. Jumpin' James Norman writes: "Hard-core jump jive that won't let you sit down -- no music lover should miss this show! -- the best of swing, jump blues, jive, and rockabilly, all in one ready-to-use package. Rocket 88 is Florida's favorite all-around dance band. They can play the same program for swing dancers, rockabilly enthusiasts, sock-hop boppers, or WWII vets, and they're always well received. Rocket 88 is not the Glenn Miller Orchestra, but a hard-driving, four-piece band that has no fear of crossing the lines of musical genre, and everything they play is danceable. Chuck and company play everything from Louis Prima, to Louis Jordan, to Bill Haley, and back again. If you like your swing hard, your rockabilly hot, and your jive jumpin', Rocket 88 is for you. This may be our last 'Last Friday' dance of the year -- please don't miss this." - Dance Lesson 8:00pm, Dance 'til 1:00am - $8 Advance, $10 Day of Show - Huge Maple Dance Floor - All Ages & Smoke-Free - Free, Well Lit, Ample Parking - Gulfport Casino, 5500 Shore Blvd S, Gulfport, 727-893-1070 This Saturday (Apr 29), Lounge Cat, a local swing & lounge combo, plays the outdoor Skipperdome at Skipper's Smokehouse in N Tampa. The show starts at 8pm and costs $5. Phone 813-971-0666. This Sunday (Apr 30), NYC band Jet Set Six makes a rare stop in Tampa Bay, at the Italian Club. This six-piece outfit is a favorite of local swing dancers and concert-goers alike, featuring a highly danceable, energetic, yet pleasant repertoire of original music. Milestone Entertainment writes: "Songwriter/Guitarist [John] Ceparano ... is backed up by five of the best musicians New York City has to offer, with one of the tightest horn sections around". Jet Set Six is easily one of the most promising swing and pop bands in the nation. They've played just about every major swing venue in the country, appeared on national TV, and won widespread acclaim for their "Livin' It Up" CD. The band is destined to hit it big on the charts, so see them Sunday, while you still can. (For more band info, visit www.jetsetsix.com .) This live concert and dance at the Italian Club is Jet Set Six's ONLY Florida appearance, on their current tour, that takes place in a dance environment. The Italian Club, with its large center stage, huge dance floor, and fine acoustics, is the area's best venue for live- band dances. If you saw Rocket 88 here in February, you already know; if you missed that show, you have to see what you've been missing! DJ Paul, spinning between sets, makes his last regular Italian Club appearance at this concert. In addition, a film crew will be shooting footage of the band, the dancers, and the concert for internet TV, so here's your chance to appear on film! Join all your swing friends, past, present, and future for one great occasion! * Live Dance & Concert with Jet Set Six, 8pm-Midnight * Beginner's Dance Lesson with Jim & Angel, 7-8pm * Music Between Sets by DJ Paul Mallett * All Ages Welcome * Huge Dance Floor: Over 2000 Square Feet, All Wood * Beautiful Historic Ballroom: Newly Renovated * Smoke-Free Concert (Cantina on another floor provided for smokers) * Full Bar + Bottled Water, Juice & Soft Drinks Available * Free Street Parking: Right Next to the Italian Club * Tickets: $8/Advance or $10/Day of Show; Buy Advance Tickets at: - Gulfport Casino Swing Nights (this Wed & Fri) & Right Step Studio - Italian Club (1731 E 7th Ave in Ybor City), 9-5 M-F; Phone 813-248-3316 & Ask for Cecelia. - DaddyKool (671 Central Ave in St Pete), 11-7 Mon-Sat; Phone 727-822-5665; This place also has lots of swing CDs! * Address & Directions: 1731 E 7th Ave in Ybor City. This is part of the above musicians' national "For Dancers Only" tour. Unfortunately, the St Pete version of the For Dancers Only tour will take place without a dance floor. Rumor has it that the Mahaffey Theater, in conjunction with this concert, will host a grand buffet (without the food), have a cash bar (without the drinks), and provide free parking (without the parking lot). All joking aside, it should be a good show, even without the dancing. Wynton Marsalis was a household name in the jazz world before swing ever became fashionable, and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra isn't too shabby either. Tickets run $30.50-$50.50, but you can save a buck or two by purchasing your tickets through the Right Step Dance Studio (727-821-9420). The concert is at 8pm, at 400 1st St S in St Pete. Phone 727-892-5767. Next Thursday (May 4), The Orpheum in Ybor City hosts a rockabilly spectacular, with Texas band, the Road Kings, and Orlando's Rocket-88 offshoot, the Blue Flame Combo. Doors open at 9pm, tickets are $6, and smoking is allowed. The Orpheum's located at 1902 Republica de Cuba (corner of 8th Ave & 14th St) in Ybor City. Phone 813-248-9500. The Road Kings are a three-piece outfit, with stand-up bass, guitar, and drums. Read more about them at http://www.sdog.com/roadking.html . Next Friday-Sunday (May 5-7), Steven Mitchell, one of the world's top Lindy hoppers, visits Tampa Bay, for a weekend of workshops & dance at the Gulfport Casino (5500 Shore Blvd S, Gulfport; 727-893-1070). No partner is required for any of the weekend's activities. The weekend starts with a Friday-night dance, where Steven teaches the Jitterbug Stroll at 8pm. This DJ dance continues to 12:30am and costs $6. Saturday features a day of classes in Lindy Hop at two levels. Lindy Hop basics will not be taught during the weekend; participants must know them beforehand (but see note below if you're a beginner). Saturday's classes include African Dance, with special guests, the Kuumba African Dancers & Drummers. Saturday night, the internationally acclaimed swinging jazz band, the Johnny Varro Swing Seven, plays for the dance. During the dance, Steven & partner, Virginie, will lead everyone in the Jitterbug Stroll. The dance also features performances by Steven & Virginie, and by Atlanta's Southern Fried Lindy Hoppers. The dance runs 8pm-1am, with east-coast beginner's lesson 8-9pm. Admission is $10. Sunday features classes in Authentic Jazz, plus Lindy Hop styling for leaders & followers, followed by "one hot Lindy Jam". Sunday also features a "Master Challenge" advanced Lindy Hop class. An $85 workshop fee includes the Saturday & Sunday classes (except for the Master Challenge) and the Saturday night dance. It's an extra $30 for the Master Challenge. After April 26, there's an additional $15 late fee. To register, e-mail XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX or phone 727-821-9420. Boot Camp for Beginners: James Norman writes, "Because of intense interest in the beginning track of our Steven Mitchell Lindy Hop Workshop Weekend, we will be offering a special class. Our four-hour, Introduction to Savoy Style Lindy Hop (Lindy Boot Camp) will be held on Sunday, April 30, 1:30-5:30pm. To take advantage of this opportunity, please contact us as soon as possible." Next Saturday (May 6) is BorderLine's bus trip to Atlantic Dance. Carson writes: "The Magic Bus will be going to Disney Boardwalk's Atlantic Dance to see and dance our collective legs off to Johnny Angel & The Swingin' Demons. They are the best swing group of the Mardi Gras, and they played all three of the popular swing clubs with such rave reviews that the newspaper had a three-page spread on them. Tickets are available by calling 813-936-0933. The bus sells out, so if you want to put your tickets on credit card, we can do that. As of 4/19, there were 18 tickets left. The price is $25 per ticket. The ticket gets you round trip, food (sandwiches from Subway), and drinks on board, including some fine vodka, whiskey, beer and wine. There will be soft drinks provided: soda, orange juice, bottled water, and grapefruit juice. The ticket also gets you free admission to Atlantic Dance. The bus has reclining seats, a VCR, and a CD player, so if you have some kewl swing music, bring it. Disney's Boardwalk is an awesome place and Atlantic Dance is pure swing. If you haven't yet been there, this is the way to go! When you are at the club and you want to get some air or scenery, the Boardwalk is packed with things to see and do. DJs should have broad & extensive music collections that appeal to a diverse audience. Sound equipment and good public speaking skills are a plus. If you're interested in auditioning or know someone who is, please respond to XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX . ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ITALIAN CLUB UPDATE If you don't know about this Sunday's Jet Set Six concert, go back to the top of this newsletter and start reading about it! Seriously, though, this is the biggest event the Suncoast Swing Gang has yet sponsored. We've made every effort to keep ticket prices low; in fact, the advance price of $8 is the same price we charged for Florida bands, Rocket 88 and Dan Electro. Make this event a success, and you'll be seeing even bigger and better ones in the future! In May, swing continues every Sunday, with beginner's lessons by Jim & Angel from 7-8pm, and swing music and dancing 8pm-midnight. The night features some of the area's finest DJs, plus swing jams, birthday circles, games, giveaways, and lots of fun & excitement in one of the Bay's best swing venues. Sunday, May 14th, is Mother's Day, so bring your mom and she gets in free! (with your paid admission). Finally, nights like this don't run themselves, but require a bunch of people to volunteer a microscopic amount of time to help with either setup or greeting people at the door. We're talking about one hour and 15 minutes once a month or once every two months; in exchange, you'll get in free on the night that you help. A very small amount of your time will not only save you a few bucks, but will help keep this great swing night of ours running. Please respond to XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX and let us know that you're willing to help at the Italian Club. For all the details on Swing Sundays at the Italian Club, go to the top of this newsletter and read about April 30th's Jet Set Six show! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SWINGERHEAD TO PERFORM WITH ORLANDO PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA StaceBass writes: "Orlando’s Michael Andrew and Swingerhead will perform with the 70-piece Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra for the series closing concert, 'All That Swing and Jive', conducted by Andrew Lane. Music will feature tributes to Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr, and Bobby Darin, plus 10 Swingerhead original songs! Tickets are still available at the door the day of performance, via Ticketmaster, at www.orlandophil.org, or at 407-896-6700. Tickets are $20-$40 (students are half price). The concert is Saturday April 29, 8:00pm, at the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre, 401 W Livingston, downtown Orlando." ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MERIDETH'S GRADUATION PARTY & FAREWELL MESSAGE Merideth writes: Wed, May 31, 2000: Merideth's Graduation Party at Gulfport Casino. Mark your calendars! At the end of May, I will be graduating from medical school and unleashed on an unsuspecting public. But never fear, my internship is in West Virginia, not Florida, so you need not worry that you will be rolled into the ER after an aerial gone wrong and see me looming over you. In any case, because you, the dancers, are my brothers and sisters, it seemed only fitting that I would celebrate this joyous occasion in the presence of all my local loved ones. On Wednesday, May 31st, Gulfport Casino's usual swing night will double as my graduation party. All members of this "family" are invited, all are welcome, all are embraced. Medical school is a process that is actually much worse than even the rumors suggest, but even at my darkest hours, the dance community of Tampa Bay has brought me many moments of uncomplicated joy. And on that note, a few parting words: I dance because I love it. Isn't that why we all got into it? Because it's fun? Few people seem to look at it this way, but swing is a folk dance; it's a dance created by the people, for the people, to bring the people together. Sure, there is a "right way" to do the moves, the clothes, the attitude, the music -- the right way is the way that brings you the greatest happiness. I have taken Lindy classes with Jamie & Arleene, taught swing classes with Sam, beat the pavement at the Rockabilly Rumble between gulps of Pabst Blue Ribbon, partnered Good Bob in a Cajun/Zydeco contest, and, Heaven preserve us, even spent whole weekends contra dancing in the woods near Gainesville. And every step I took was a freaking blast. I don't dance to be cool -- I've been doing it for two years and, clearly, I'm still not cool. I don't dance to make money -- as any dance instructor can tell you, between the two, medicine is clearly the cash cow. And dancing is not convenient for someone with my lifestyle -- I have shown up to teach still wearing my scrubs because I just left the O.R., and have stayed out until after midnight to dance even when I had to be at the hospital at 4am the next day. I have been known to make a four-hour round trip from Ft Myers to touch base at Gulfport for an evening. Why? Because I need dancing like I need oxygen. And I love being around people who feel the same. Do you think it's fun being around doctors all the time? No way. But dancers? Sure! Because if you dance, that's an important enough thing to have in common that the rest of it -- profession, appearance, age, ethnic background, sexual orientation -- all that falls by the wayside. And who cares if the music you happen to like or the clothes you happen to wear aren't exactly like those of some of the other dancers you might encounter? It doesn't hurt you any. Don't tolerate each other. Do more than tolerate each other. Appreciate each other. Celebrate each other. If you are really putting yourself and your joy and your pain and your soul into your dancing, the only important difference between Lindy hop, rockabilly, west coast, Cajun, contra, and shag is the spelling of the words. I'll miss every one of you, the followers who have shown me such camaraderie and sisterhood, and the leaders who were so gracious about having their eyes slashed by my high-velocity hair. I hope you all can love each other as much as I love you. Please come celebrate my graduation and each other along with me on May 31st. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MUSICAL FORMAT IDEA Roy Rydbeck writes: It appears there are only a handful of die-hard Lindy Hoppers, and a whole bunch of people who are learning but don't know enough Lindy hop to dance all evening long. But the list of die-hards is growing. Also, there appears to be a shrinking rock-a-billy crowd. A year ago, a rock-a-billy DJ event could bring in 50 dancers. The last couple of times I was at the Orpheum (which has an all rock-a-billy format), there were 10-15 people. The majority of the swing crowd seems to want a good mix of styles and tempos -- not too much one thing or another. I believe the best DJ format is as follows: 1) 2-3 songs for newer dancers: medium tempo stuff, jazz- or rock- based with easy to follow beats; maybe the more familiar songs. 2) 2-3 songs targeted at the rock-a-billy crowd: rock-a-billy music of varying tempos; even some fast stuff. 3) Repeat (1) 4) 2-3 good Lindy songs: jazz-based swing with tempos as low as 120 beats per minute, but no higher than 160. Then repeat this every 30 minutes. Most dancers don't dance more than two or three songs in a row. No one gets upset if they know their favored style is coming up within every 30-minute set. Just a thought on how to appease everyone's musical tastes. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Swing News Editor: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Contributing Editor: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Know any upcoming swing happenings or other news?
