Starting next Sunday (July 30th), this weekly event will be held at Zendah Grotto, 4109 N Lauber Way in Tampa. All details are the same as before: 7pm Lesson, Dance until Midnight, $5 Admission, Etc. The new hall has a nice large hardwood dance floor and sells soft drinks, bottled water, and snacks; for alcoholic beverages, it's BYO. Like all events sponsored by the Suncoast Swing Gang, this one is nonsmoking. The hall has plenty of free parking, within its own fenced-in lot. More details on the night and exciting additions are forthcoming in future Swing News, but check it out for yourself on Sunday, July 30. Directions: I-275 to Dale Mabry N. Left onto Tampa Bay Blvd. Pass HCC and turn right onto Lauber just after the road splits. Zendah Grotto is the only building on the right. Phone 813-872-0812 for additional directions. What about Swing Sunday tonight, July 23rd? If you happen to go over to the Italian Club, you'll notice that they've closed their doors one week early. (Sorry for the lack of notice, but this was a last-minute decision by the Italian Club.) We'll be sending people across the street to the Ybor City Diner, a 50's-style diner that's agreed to let us play some music and move some tables to create a dance floor. Admission is free, but be sure to buy some food or something to drink. Also bring your favorite CDs. It's open to 10 or 11pm. Afterward, Amanda and Katie will be having a party at their place to mark this momentous occasion. Details will be available at the Diner. Speaking of relocating dances, Jumpin' James tells us that Wednesday swing dances will continue at the Gulfport Casino throughout August, before moving to the Polish-American Society in September. You are invited to help shape the future of swing in Tampa Bay. The Suncoast Swing Gang will hold its next business meeting 6pm, Sunday, 7/30, at Bob Sutter's place, 208 S Renellie in south Tampa. (Phone 813-281-0557.) Refreshments will be provided. The Suncoast Swing Gang is a nonprofit, grassroots organization, that was started over two years ago to help promote swing in Tampa Bay. Since then, the group has experienced phenomenal growth and has had many highly successful undertakings, such as the recent Indigo concert. The group is now at a crossroads, revisiting core issues such as its primary mission and its structure. If you have any input on what your organization should be about, how it should be structured, or how it should conduct its business, now is the time to get involved. Attend the meeting if you can or, at the least, reply to this issue of Swing News with your ideas in writing. Thanks to everyone who helped spread the word and who helped make the recent Indigo concert a huge success! We should be hearing more about the concert, including Beth's interview with the band, in an upcoming Swing News. Also, thanks to the crew of dancers -- Bob Moseley, Liz, Tim, Seth, Jenny Faye, Desiree, and Lee from Orlando -- who went out & performed to promote local swing at the Millennium Park's July 4th Celebration. Bob tells us that it was really hot on stage and all the dancers were soaked after their show. Speaking of getting soaked on July 4th, Billy of Bombed Out Cat writes: "Let me tip my brim to all of you who braved the rain in Vinoy Park on the 4th. I couldn't have had a better feeling than looking out & seeing so many swing dancers & Bombed Out Cat t-shirts! We're incredibly sorry that the sound company shut us down before we could get started. So sorry, in fact, that we will put on a "July 4th Raincheck" gig ...." As previously announced, the August issue of Swing News is due 8/1/00. The submission deadline is 5pm, Sunday 7/30/00. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- UPCOMING SPECIAL EVENTS Fri Jul 28: Dance @ Gulfport Casino; $6; 8-9pm Lesson; 9:00pm-12:30am Dance; All Ages; Smoke-Free; 727-893-1070 Fri Jul 28: Swingin' Mooks @ Skipper's Smokehouse; 8pm; $5; Ages 18+; Outdoors; 813-971-0666 Fri Aug 4: Johnny Varro Swing Seven @ Gulfport Casino; $10; 8-9pm Lesson; 9:00pm-12:30am Dance; All Ages; Smoke-Free; 727-893-1070 Fri Aug 11: Rocket 350 & The Skirtlifters @ Skipper's Smokehouse Sat Aug 12: Cigar Store Indians & Midnight Bowler's League @ Club More 727-466-6673 Sat Aug 26: Lindy Night @ Pinellas Park Auditorium Fri Sep 1: Roomful of Blues & Dynatones @ Skipper's Smokehouse Sat Sep 9: USF Swing Dance @ Marshall Center Ballroom Tue Sep 19: Red Elvises & Swingin' Mooks @ Skipper's Smokehouse Sat Sep 23: Florida Orchestra ("Swing, Baby, Swing!" show) @ Mahaffey Theater; 727-892-5767 Fri Sep 29: USF Swing Dance @ Marshall Center Ballroom Fri Sep 29: Swingin' Mooks @ Skipper's Smokehouse; 813-971-0666 Fri Oct 13 - Sun Oct 15: Frankie Manning in St Pete Fri Oct 13: Dance Party w/ Frankie Manning @ St Pete Pier Sat Oct 14: Johnny Varro Swing Seven @ Coliseum; 727-892-5202 Fri Oct 20: USF Swing Dance @ Marshall Center Ballroom Fri Nov 17: USF Swing Dance @ Marshall Center Ballroom Tue Nov 21: Count Basie Orchestra @ Ruth Eckerd Hall; 727-791-7400 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Swing News Editor: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Contributing Editor: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Know any upcoming swing happenings or other news?
