Hard to believe it's been three years since the first issue came out in April 1998. Kimberly Kaye has an excellent new swinging quartet playing Le Bordeaux Restaurant in Hyde Park. Several of us checked them out last night and had a great time. Also on Friday (Apr 6) Swing City Dance Studio in Tampa holds a West- Coast Swing dance. The music will be west-coast jazz, funk, and blues, with some music thrown in for other dances such as hustle, slow dance, and cha cha. But that's not until May. In April (Sat Apr 14), Skipper's hosts Rockabilly Roundup, featuring Charlie Zayas & the Midnight Ramblers (that's Chuck of Rocket 88 and his new band), plus the Hindu Cowboys. Skipper's sums up the event as "songs about women, booze, guitars & money". Tickets are $6 to this 8pm concert. It's open to ages 18 & up (under 18 admitted if accompanied by parent). Any kid who wants to learn swing dance may participate. Instructor Pam Callender provides the training every Tuesday at 6pm in Tampa (Temple Terrace). There's a $35 annual membership fee, but after that, all training is free, provided that dancers go out and perform in the community. Going on two years now in Sarasota, the Spats Cats program has taught hundreds of kids to dance, and produced numerous excellent swing dancers. The program provides participants the opportunity to dance, perform, and compete both locally and nationally. No partner is necessary; however, to assure a good balance of leaders and followers, those without partners must register by April 25th. We are arranging travel packages with dance workshops for the Jazz Festival in June/July. The Jazz Festival is the largest in the world, with world renowned artists.
