All Ages,   Nonsmoking,   $10,   9pm-1am (Lesson 8-9)
Palm Ave & Nebraska,   Ybor City,   (813) 274-4950

Swing Time kicks off its new season of events this Friday (Jan 4) with Jennifer & the Venturas, the band recently voted Best Original Band and Best Jazz Band by Weekly Planet readers. At their Swing Time debut last August, the band energized the near-record crowd of dancers and swing enthusiasts. People remarked that it was an incredible night of music, dancing, and all-around fun.
"Jennifer & the Venturas bring to Swing Time a versatile mix of swing styles from the 1920's through today -- jive, jump blues, jazz, sultry blues, and classic rhythm & blues / rock & roll. Jennifer Sweat is the powerful yet smooth voice of the band, reminiscent of the big band singers of the 1930's & 40's. But her impressive vocals deliver everything from hot jazz to Elvis' 'Heartbreak Hotel'. Rounding out the band are the veteran guitar player, bassist, and drummer from 'Dan Electro & the Silvertones'. Plus, joining Jennifer & the Venturas at Swing Time will be a special guest sax player! Whether or not you were part of the excitement last time, be sure to catch Jennifer & the Venturas this Friday. You'll be glad you did!" [Swing Time]

All Ages,   Nonsmoking,   $10-$15,   2:00-5:30pm
8100 Park Blvd N,   Pinellas Park,   (727) 584-0585

This event is put on by the Suncoast Dixieland Jazz Society (SDJS). Bill Allred's band plays jazz festivals across the country and is known for their excellent musicianship and for playing swing. The venue has a medium-size dance floor in front of the stage. Admission to this afternoon event is $10 for SDJS members and $15 for nonmembers. Since many people show up just to listen to the band, the SDJS asks that people refrain from talking while the band is playing. Dancers should, as always, be courteous to others on the floor (dance in control, minimize space usage, etc).

SOUTH FLORIDA LINDY EXCHANGE:  JAN 11-13

Florida's first lindy hop exchange is coming up Fri-Sun, January 11-13, in the Ft Lauderdale/Miami area. Sponsored by South Florida's Swing Affair, this lindy exchange will include DJ dances, live-band dances, late-night dances, and afternoon dances -- over seven dances in one weekend! Registration is $45 (or $60 if you want the t-shirt). Limited housing is available upon request. The following Q&A is courtesy of Arnold.

Q: So, what exactly is a Lindy Exchange?
A: A Lindy Exchange is, at its core, an open invitation to dancers around the country and around the world to visit a host city to dance, socialize, tour the sites, learn some local and national traditions, and enjoy the hospitality and the local personalities. Often, visitors include touring professional dancers, instructors, and other people who enjoy travel and meeting other dancers. Expect to see some good dancers and some amazing dancers. Organizers generally plan evening dances (until about Midnight), after hours events (after midnight to the early morning hours), and afternoon events (generally, "Lindy in the Park" type events). If asked, most organizing committees also try to arrange housing so visitors can stay with a local and avoid hotel and transit costs. Although a Lindy Exchange is Lindy oriented, all dancers are welcome.

Q: What is SwingAffair?
A: SwingAffair is South Florida's local swing society. They organize a regular dance (usually once or twice a month), periodic workshops, and generally try to promote swing dancing around South Florida. They are a very friendly group and are excellent hosts. I've visited five times already; other Tampa Bay dancers have visited more times than that. I've always felt welcomed during their events; I've always felt they wanted us there and appreciated the company and support. They are a good group to meet and a good group to know. During some larger Tampa Bay events, between 5 and 12 South Florida dancers visit our area. Some dancers make the trip so often, it's sometimes difficult to determine in which area they actually live.
