Fri Feb 15 Live-Music Dance |
All Ages, Nonsmoking, $10, 9pm-1am (Lesson 8-9) Palm Ave & Nebraska, Ybor City, (813) 274-4950 Get ready to swing like never before, with the Ten O'Clock Band, an 18-piece big band! When people speak of "the big bands", this is what they mean -- five saxes, four trumpets, four trombones, plus piano, bass, drums, guitar, and vocals. The band's bold & brassy sound will fill the Grand Ballroom, with minimal need for amplification, letting you experience the classic days of swing as it was meant to be played, heard, danced to, and otherwise enjoyed. The Ten O'Clock Band's repertoire includes the swinging hits of Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Glenn Miller, and all the major big bands of the swing era, plus more contemporary swinging jazz arrangements as well. Exciting soloists, excellent musicianship, and great coordination as a unit have earned the band the praise of fellow musicians across the Bay area. The event takes place in Centro Asturiano's elegant Grand Ballroom, the same hall where big bands -- including those of Count Basie, Harry James, and Woody Herman -- played back in the 1940's & 50's. So take advantage of this unique opportunity to swing in vintage style and experience the excitement of the original big-band era! Like all Swing-Time events, this one will include a dance show at 11pm, prize giveaways throughout the night, a full bar, and an abundance of swing dancing, social interaction, and general ambiance. |

Three events remain in the Coliseum's Big-Band Ballroom Series this winter:
Sat Feb 9: Abe Guard's Salute to Glenn Miller
Sat Feb 16: Russ Morgan Orchestra w/ Jack Morgan
Sat Mar 2: 42nd Street Orchestra's Tribute to Sinatra
These dances feature a mix of sweet music, ballads, ballroom & latin music, and,
of course, swing! In general, you can expect to swing to 1 out of
every 2-4 songs.
Last Saturday was the opening event, with the Charly Raymond Orchestra's tribute to Harry James & the Andrew Sisters. For those who missed it, the St Pete Coliseum was a sight to behold, as it was jam-packed, albeit primarily with the over-65 crowd. The big-band played its heart out, though the Coliseum's grand echo tended to create two sets of beats. The delightful apex of the evening was when the three-lady group, the "Apple Blossoms", came onto stage to sing the songs of the Andrew Sisters. They had the act down "to a tee", complete with costume changes each set, sassy stage presence, and nice harmonies. Many audience members showed their appreciation by stopping their dancing and crowding the front third of the dance floor, in of the stage. However, no moshing ensued. Throughout the evening, many enthusiastic dancers filled the floor. Surprisingly, the dance-floor etiquette you may have learned in ballroom class was not to be seen, as couples would foxtrot and otherwise travel every which way across the center of the floor, directly through the path of other couples doing swing and other stationary dances in the middle; likewise, other couples would park themselves on the perimeter of the floor. The dancers, however, seemed to expect that manner of dancing, and most managed to have a very good time.
Events in the Big-Band Ballroom Series are nonsmoking, open to all ages, and run 8pm-12am. Tickets are $13 in advance or $15 at the door, and available at the Coliseum's Box Office (727-892-5202). The Coliseum is located at 535 4th Ave N in St Pete.
Do you have friends who might be interested in swing, but haven't yet started? Do you know regular swing-dancers who never seem to know when the next event is? Then turn them on to the Swing News! If you reply to this message with a friend's name & e-mail address, we'll send them a sample issue and invite them to subscribe. (Subscribing, by the way, is free.)
What if your friend has no e-mail? Well, occasionally -- whenever an event sponsor is willing to pay for the mailing -- we send announcements of swing events out by US Mail. To get on the Swing News postal mailing list, a person just needs to give us their address.
Finally, a great way to promote local swing is to grab a few of the Swing News Business Cards, available at events throughout Tampa Bay, and to carry them with you, giving them to people you meet who might be interested in swing events. If you'd like us to mail you some cards, just reply to this newsletter and let us know where to mail them and how many to send.
